One of the best things about the world being so accessible by air travel is that it has become possible for us to take our vacations much farther away from home. This gives us the means to access some of the world's most fascinating festivals without having to take a leave of absence from work. Now the toughest part of taking a vacation is deciding when and where. There are so many fascinating festivals to choose from. We can't introduce you to them all, but we can give you a categorical overview and get you started with your research.
Arts Festivals
Often some of the most fascinating world festivals are devoted to the arts - specifically to music, film, and theater - as these are the easiest to share with crowds. The Cannes Film Festival, held every year in France, is the creme de la creme of film, while the World Wearable Arts Show in New Zealand showcases all that is new and exciting about fashion. Even the little-known Museumnacht Festival, held in the Netherlands in March, is worth checking out, as it means that all nation's museums put on special shows and stay open until 2am.
Holiday Festivals
Although Christmas and Ramadaan are probably the world's most widely celebrated holidays, it's often the more obscure, unusual, or strictly local holiday days that spawn the most fascinating festivals. American Independence Day on July 4th is feted to the extreme with barbecues, airshows, and fireworks all over the United States while Chinese New Year, celebrated in late winter, is a 15 day extravaganza involving dances, parades, mythology, and traditional decorations that is celebrated all over the world, not just in China.
Religious Festivals
You don't have to be a member of the religion to enjoy some of the world's biggest religious festival. Mardi Gras, for example, is a celebration of the Catholic holiday known as Shrove Tuesday and celebrations in French and Spanish areas all over the world involve floats, parades, masked balls, and freebies. Meanwhile the Day of the Dead, celebrated exclusively in Mexico and South America, is a fascinating mix of the morbid and the spectacular.
Heritage Festivals
If you really want to experience a country, you should attend a festival that celebrates their cultural heritage. La Tomatina, celebrated in Spain, is a wacky mix of tomato throwing and bull taunting, while Octoberfest in Germany features beer, sausages, and the famous lederhosen. It's also hard to top the famous Calgary Stampede as an introduction into the cowboy heritage of the North American west. From battle reenactments to archaeological displays, there's always something to learn at a heritage festival.
